Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)

The total productive maintenance (TPM) concept is applied to ensure that production facilities are used to their optimum capacity. The concept aims to ensure the unlimited availability of tools, machinery, and plants through consistent maintenance and servicing work. Continuous maintenance and improvements thus help to boost the efficiency and availability of plants so that they can be used to their optimum capacity.

The concept focuses first and foremost on the zero-defect and zero-breakdown principles. As a result, TPM helps to stop production capacities being wasted due to idle running, short-term stoppages, plant shutdowns, unnecessary set-up and configuration times, low cycle frequencies, and poor quality. Because continuous maintenance work on plants helps to prevent errors, TPM can also sometimes stand for total preventive maintenance.
